Boral Driveway & Pavers: The Redwood City Owner’s Guide

Boral driveway and paver repairs in Redwood City typically run $500-$3,200 depending on whether we’re resetting settled pavers, replacing a failed edge restraint, or addressing subsurface drainage failure. We stock Boral-compatible edge restraints, polymeric sands, and paver units for common series, and most repairs are completed in one working day. Most Redwood City homeowners discover the problem after rain: water pooling where it didn’t before, or a paver lip catching a shoe that was flush last season.

Which Boral Models This Applies To

Boral’s hardscape line in the Bay Area market breaks into three series most commonly seen in Redwood City installations: the Old World cobble-style pavers (60mm and 80mm thicknesses), the StoneCreek slab system (24″ × 24″ and 18″ × 18″ units), and the TruEdge permeable paver used in several Woodside Road-area driveways for stormwater compliance. The critical compatibility gotcha is edge restraint profile: Old World 60mm requires a 6-inch aluminum L-profile, while 80mm and StoneCreek need an 8-inch profile with a deeper stake pocket. We’ve found mismatched edge restraints on three Redwood City jobs where a previous installer used generic 6-inch stock for an 80mm installation; the restraint lifts within 18 months, and the field pavers migrate.

To identify your series, check the spacer nibs on the paver underside. Old World has four corner nibs; StoneCreek has two parallel rails; TruEdge has a lattice of nibs with visible voids for infiltration. If your original invoice is lost, a paver dimension and nib count gets us to the right part. We source OEM Boral edge restraints and polymeric sand where the spec demands it, but we also stock Versa-Lok and Techno-Bloc equivalents that meet the same ASTM C936 spec at lower unit cost. The decision point is usually color match: Boral’s Sierra blend and Coastal Tan are proprietary, so visible repairs need OEM units. Edge restraints and bedding sand are functionally identical across brands.

Signs Your Boral Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

Signs Your Boral Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
  • Water pooling in lanes that previously drained clean. The bedding sand beneath has washed out or compacted unevenly, often from a failed joint sand seal. In Redwood City’s clay-heavy soils around the Farm Hill neighborhood, this accelerates after one wet winter.
  • Individual pavers rocking under foot or tire. The bedding layer has settled or eroded locally. Left unaddressed, the paver corners chip against the adjacent units and the repair grows from resetting one paver to replacing six.
  • Visible gap opening at the driveway edge or against the garage slab. The edge restraint has pulled its stakes or corroded through. Redwood City’s municipal code requires restraints rated for vehicular load; residential-grade plastic edging fails predictably here.
  • Joint sand washing out in sheets after rain. The polymeric sand bond has broken down, usually from improper activation (water applied too heavily during initial install) or UV degradation past year seven in direct Peninsula sun.
  • Efflorescence blooming as a white film, especially in shaded sections. Calcium hydroxide migration from the concrete base; it’s cosmetic but signals moisture moving through the assembly in a pattern that will eventually degrade the bedding layer.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Resetting settled pavers with fresh bedding sand and joint material runs $500-$1,400 for a typical two-car driveway section. Edge restraint replacement with stake-down and backfill runs $800-$2,200 depending on linear feet and whether we’re cutting against an existing garage slab. Full section replacement due to subsurface failure starts around $2,800 and can reach $3,200 if we need to regrade and install new base rock.

Repair Type Price Range (Redwood City) What’s Included
Paver reset (localized) $500-$1,400 Lift, rebed in ASTM C33 sand, restack, new polymeric sand joint
Edge restraint replacement $800-$2,200 Remove failed restraint, install aluminum L-profile, stake at 12″ O.C., backfill
Section replacement with base repair $2,800-$3,200 Excavate to 6″ min. base, regrade, new Class 2 aggregate, bedding sand, pavers, joint sand

What drives the range is access (steep grades in Emerald Hills add labor) and paver availability. Discontinued Boral colors require us to source remnant stock or propose a compatible substitute. Every repair quote is flat and written before work starts, under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers settling, joint sand loss, or restraint movement at no charge. We pull permits when the repair exceeds 25% of the driveway area, per San Mateo County requirements.

What a homeowner can safely check: verify whether the paver is loose (lifts by hand) or fixed but uneven; measure the gap at the edge restraint; photograph the paver underside nibs for identification. What goes wrong in DIY: improper bedding sand gradation (play sand or all-purpose sand washes out in months), overwatering polymeric sand during activation (creates a crust that cracks), and driving edge stakes into irrigation or conduit buried at the perimeter. The stakes on a proper restraint are 10-inch spikes; hitting a 3/4-inch PVC line is expensive.

We don’t recommend DIY for any repair involving base excavation or regrading; the compaction requirement is 95% modified Proctor, which rental plate compactors rarely achieve in inexperienced hands. Call (650) 560-7228 and we’ll scope it in person, with a written price before any work starts.
