Which ES Windows Models This Applies To

ES Windows produces several roofing-integrated product lines, and the part you need depends on the series stamped on the interior frame label. The ES-5000 Fixed Skylight, ES-6000 Venting Skylight, and ES-8000 Flat Roof Window series each use different curb dimensions, gasket profiles, and flashing kits. The label is typically located on the upper right corner of the interior frame; you’ll need the six-digit model code that starts with the series prefix.

Here’s where owners get tripped up: ES Windows changed their curb width from 2×4 to 2×6 construction in 2019 to meet updated Title 24 energy requirements. A pre-2019 flashing kit on a post-2019 unit won’t seat properly, and you’ll get a gap that caulk can’t fix. We carry both curb adapters and the correct OEM-compatible flashing for each era. Aftermarket equivalents exist for the ES-5000 and ES-6000 gaskets, but we source the OEM EPDM membrane for the ES-8000 flat roof series because the compression fit is tighter and the Peninsula’s marine layer will test any seal.

Signs Your ES Windows Roofing Is Failing

• Water staining on the ceiling below the unit. This usually means the IGU gasket has compressed or the curb flashing has lifted. In Redwood City’s older homes, especially in the Stambaugh-Heller neighborhood, we’ve seen original 1990s gaskets turn to powder after decades of UV exposure through the glass.
• Draft or temperature drop near the skylight. The thermal break in the frame is intact, but the argon fill in the IGU has leaked and the low-E coating is compromised. You’ll feel it before you see it, usually in January when the fog rolls in off the Bay.
• Condensation between the glass panes. The IGU seal has failed. This is permanent; defogging sprays don’t work on tempered ES Windows glass, and we don’t recommend them.
• Cracking or curling of the exterior flashing. The painted aluminum flashing on pre-2015 units was thinner gauge and doesn’t hold up to Redwood City’s salt air as well as the current anodized version. We see this most on west-facing roofs in the Farm Hill area.
• Difficulty opening or closing a venting unit. The operator arm gears have stripped or the chain drive has lost tension. ES-6000 units from 2012-2017 had a batch of zinc-alloy gears that corrode in high-humidity conditions; we stock brass replacements that outlast them.

What you shouldn’t do: climb on a wet roof, pry at the flashing, or attempt to reglaze an IGU yourself. The tempered glass in ES Windows units is under thermal stress and can shatter unpredictably when handled without the proper suction cups and frame support. The curb-mounted units also require proper ice-and-water shield integration that most homeowners don’t have the materials for.
