Which Ameristar Models This Applies To

Ameristar produced three residential roofing series relevant to the Redwood City market: the WeatherGuard 2000 (1998-2006), the WeatherGuard 3000 (2004-2012), and the short-lived Titan line (2009-2011). The WeatherGuard 2000 used a 1.2-mil TPO membrane with 6-inch seam overlaps; the 3000 upgraded to 1.5-mil with 12-inch overlaps and a different fastening pattern. The Titan line, which we see occasionally in the Farm Hills area, used a modified bitumen substrate that Ameristar discontinued after delamination issues in coastal climates.

To identify your series, check the manufacturing label on the membrane underside, visible at any vent penetration or where prior repair work exposed the field. The part number prefix tells you: WG2-, WG3-, or TN-. For the WeatherGuard 3000, the OEM termination bar is a 1.75-inch extrusion with pre-punched slots at 4-inch centers; the 2000 used 1.5-inch at 6-inch centers. Generic 1.5-inch bars will physically fit the 3000 but leave fastener holes exposed to water intrusion. We carry both OEM Ameristar bars and a Mil-spec equivalent that matches the 3000 slot pattern exactly; the aftermarket saves about $40 in material but we only specify it when the substrate condition allows.

Signs Your Ameristar Roofing Is Failing

• Water stains on ceiling drywall below the roof plane. On Ameristar systems, this usually traces to seam adhesive degradation at the field overlaps, not puncture damage. The TPO flexes fine; the glue behind it doesn’t, especially where attic temperatures in Redwood City’s inland valleys spike past 140°F in August.
• Bubbling or tenting of the membrane surface. Trapped moisture off-gasses between the membrane and insulation board, lifting the TPO. We see this most on south-facing slopes above unvented attics in the Mount Carmel neighborhood, where heat buildup accelerates the adhesive failure.
• Cracking at penetration flashings (vents, pipes, skylights). Ameristar’s factory-formed boots used a PVC formulation that gets brittle after 12-15 years in UV. The crack starts at the top radius and propagates downward; by the time you see water inside, the lath below is often saturated.
• Fastener back-out visible as small pimples in the membrane. The stress plates pull through the TPO over time, leaving a channel for water. On WeatherGuard 2000 systems, the original plates were 2-inch diameter; Ameristar increased to 3-inch in 2004, which is the retrofit size we use on 2000 repairs.
• Granule accumulation in gutters from a coated membrane system. If your Ameristar roof has an asphalt cap sheet (Titan line or certain 2000 custom orders), granule loss signals the coating is oxidizing. Once the asphalt core is exposed, you’ve got 18-24 months before through-cracking in our climate.
