The OEM-versus-aftermarket question is straightforward for Boral: there is no generic equivalent to TruExterior’s poly-ash formulation, which is 70% fly ash and 30% polymer by weight. Versetta Stone panels, however, can sometimes be matched with Eldorado Stone or Coronado Stone profiles if the color run has been discontinued. • Surface cracking or checking on trim boards. The crack is cosmetic until water gets behind it.
• Soft or punky areas at the bottom course of siding. Boral’s poly-ash is moisture-resistant but not moisture-proof. If the foundation grade was backfilled too high or the drip edge was omitted, capillary wicking will degrade the bottom edge from the back side first. You’ll feel it before you see it.
• Versetta Stone panels pulling away from the wall at corners. The hidden clip system relies on a precise 1/4″ engagement; if the original installer drove fasteners too deep or used non-Boral screws with a different head diameter, thermal cycling loosens the grip. The panel doesn’t fall, but the shadow line opens up and water gets in.
• Efflorescence or white staining on stone veneer. This is salts migrating through the mortar or panel face, common in Boral Versetta when the water-resistive barrier behind it has failed. In Redwood City, we see this most on north-facing ADU walls that never fully dry after our November-through-April wet season.
• Interior drywall stains near addition roof-wall intersections. Boral siding itself isn’t the leak; the failure is usually at the flashing transition where the addition meets the existing structure. But because Boral’s trim boards are often used to cover that joint, the repair requires removing trim to access flashing, then reinstalling with proper slope and sealant.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground and a hard stop. An owner can walk the exterior with a screwdriver and probe suspect trim boards; if the tip sinks in easily, you’ve got decay. You can also photograph the Boral stamp on the back of a board and email it to us for identification. What you should not do is remove Versetta Stone panels yourself; they’re 15-20 pounds each, stacked vertically, and the clip release requires a specific prying angle. A dropped panel cracks, and a panel cracked in the wrong place can’t be re-hung.

More critically, any repair that involves the WRB, flashing, or sheathing is structural work.
