Which Grohe Models This Applies To

Grohe labels its residential lines clearly on the escutcheon ring or underside of the spout. The Eurocube series, with its square profile and 1/2-inch connections, is the most common spec we see in Redwood City ADU kitchens where counter depth is tight. Eurodisc, the older lever-style line, uses a 46mm cartridge that is not interchangeable with the 35mm cartridge found in newer Minta pulldowns. The thermostatic shower valves, part of the Grohtherm line, have a date stamp on the brass body behind the trim plate that tells us whether you have the pre-2013 3/4-inch high-flow body or the post-2013 Eco version with integrated flow limiters.

OEM Grohe cartridges run $45-$120 depending on series, and we source them through authorized distributors in San Jose with next-day availability on oddball parts. Aftermarket equivalents exist for the 46mm and 35mm cartridges at roughly half the price, but we do not install them in thermostatic valves because the temperature-mixing tolerance is too tight. For standard single-handle kitchen faucets, a quality aftermarket cartridge is fine and we will note it on the written quote so you can choose.

Signs Your Grohe Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

• Water temperature swings without touching the handle. The thermostatic wax element inside the Grohtherm valve has degraded, usually from mineral buildup accelerated by Redwood City’s moderately hard water. The element can no longer expand and contract fast enough to maintain the set temperature.
• Handle gets stiff, then loose, then stiff again. The ceramic discs in the cartridge are cracking. This cycling happens because the cartridge housing has micro-flexed over years of use, and Redwood City’s clay-heavy soil can transmit minor foundation movement to wall-mounted fixtures.

You can safely check whether the problem is the cartridge or the supply by turning off the angle stops and testing pressure at the supply line, but do not attempt to remove a Grohtherm thermostatic module yourself. The brass body is under 60 psi of municipal pressure, and the retaining clips are positioned where a slip with a wrench can crack the tile backer or shear the valve body.
