OEM Kohler cartridges and valves carry the full warranty and guaranteed finish match, which matters in open-concept additions where the bathroom is visible from living space. Aftermarket equivalents exist for cartridges and flappers, but we don’t use them on pressure-balancing or thermostatic valves - the tolerances on Kohler’s ceramic disc technology are tight enough that third-party cartridges we’ve tested in the field tend to chatter or fail to hold temperature within the advertised range. Signs Your Kohler Component Needs Attention

• Temperature drift during showers. The pressure-balancing cartridge (K-304-KS or K-304-KR) uses a sliding piston to maintain mix; hard water scale from Redwood City’s Hetch Hetchy supply builds behind the O-rings over 6-10 years, causing the piston to stick and output to swing hot or cold when a toilet flushes elsewhere in the house.
• Dripping from the showerhead when the valve is off. This usually traces to seat wear in the cartridge, not the handle seal. • Loose handle with no visible set screw. Kohler’s newer trim lines use a spline broach that wears if the cartridge binds; the handle feels sloppy but the screw is tight. The fix is cartridge replacement, not handle replacement, though by the time this symptom appears the broach often needs both.
• Slow fill on Kohler toilets specified in ADU baths. The K-1069722 fill valve diaphragm degrades faster in the warmer, uninsulated conditions common in Redwood City garage conversions; fill time extending past 45 seconds usually means the valve is drawing near failure, not just running slowly.
• Finish pitting on exposed trim. Coastal air in Redwood City accelerates galvanic corrosion where dissimilar metals contact; Kohler’s PVD finishes hold up better than electroplated, but if the original installer used steel escutcheon screws with a brass valve body, the finish fails at the screw perimeter first.

DIY or Call Us?

Homeowners can safely verify the model number, check for visible leaks at supply stops, and confirm whether their water pressure falls within Kohler’s 45-80 psi specification - Redwood City’s municipal pressure runs 55-75 psi in most zones, but elevation changes in the Farm Hill area can drop pressure at the fixture. What goes wrong in DIY is usually the cartridge extraction: Kohler’s K-304 series requires a specific orientation to clear the body, and forcing it with channel locks cracks the brass ears.
