The Perma-Lock 60mm and 80mm pavers are the most common in Redwood City installations from 2015 onward, identifiable by the PGT stamp on the chamfer edge and the lot number molded into the bedding face. The OEM-versus-aftermarket question for PGT is straightforward in our experience. PGT’s Perma-Lock color blends, particularly the Coastal Tan and Sierra Granite, are proprietary mixes; a generic paver will match structurally but read slightly off in daylight. For edge restraints and drainage components, we use PGT-specified equivalents from Belgard and Techo-Bloc, both brands we stock alongside KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone product lines. The critical compatibility gotcha: Pre-Vent drainage channels (pre-2016) used a 4-inch width that PGT later narrowed to 3.5 inches. A current replacement grate will rock in the old channel unless we sleeve it, which we note in the written scope before quoting.

Signs Your PGT Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

• Sunken or tilting pavers near downspouts or driveway edges. Water migration washes out the bedding sand beneath; in Redwood City’s winter-soak, spring-dry cycle, this happens faster than inland Bay Area installations. The paver itself is usually intact, but the base has voided.
• Joint sand washing out and staying out. Polymeric joint sand should reset after rain. If it’s gone for good, the bedding layer beneath has likely degraded or the initial compaction was insufficient for the load.
• Edge restraint pulling away from the paver field. Spikes corrode in Redwood City’s coastal air within 8-12 years, faster if the lawn irrigation hits them twice weekly. Once the restraint goes, the field spreads and loses interlock.

Where DIY goes wrong: lifting settled pavers without checking the base layer. The bedding sand is structural, not decorative, and must be screeded to consistent depth before re-compaction. Hand-tamping rarely achieves the 95% Proctor density that prevents the next round of settlement. For drainage channel work, the slope must maintain 1% minimum to the outlet; a flat re-install traps water and accelerates freeze damage.
