Which Silestone Models This Applies To

Silestone roofing was produced in three distinct series between 2003 and 2019: the original Silestone Slate-Look (SL-200 through SL-400), the Silestone Composite Tile (CT-500 and CT-600), and the short-run Silestone Metal-Blend (MB-700, discontinued 2012). The SL series used a 46-inch panel width with a proprietary hook-and-channel fastening system; the CT series shifted to a standard 12-inch tile format with interlocking butt edges. The critical compatibility gotcha: MB-700 flashing profiles are not interchangeable with SL or CT lines, and MB-700 panels were only produced in two colors, Graphite and Sierra Sand.

To identify your series, check the underside of any lifted panel for a stamped code beginning with SL, CT, or MB, or measure panel width at the exposure. For SL-series repairs, we source OEM-compatible membrane and fasteners from our regular supplier; for CT-series, quality aftermarket equivalents from Vistaflex and Perma-Boot meet the same 110-mil thickness spec at lower cost. We do not stock MB-700 panels, but we can fabricate compatible flashing and source close-match standing seam for transition repairs.

Signs Your Silestone Roofing Is Failing

• Granule accumulation in gutters or at downspout outlets. Silestone’s acrylic topcoat breaks down under UV exposure faster on south and west exposures in Redwood City; heavy granule loss means the waterproof substrate is directly exposed. We see this most often on homes built 2008-2014.
• Lifted or cupped panels at valleys and ridges. Thermal cycling between our 45°F winter lows and 85°F summer peaks causes the composite substrate to expand and contract; fasteners back out, and panels lift. The underlying membrane then carries all water load until it fails.
• Staining or soft spots on interior ceilings, especially after January storms. Redwood City’s concentrated winter rain pattern means a small membrane breach can dump significant water in a single event. By the time drywall stains show, the OSB or plywood deck has often been wet for two or three cycles.
• Rust streaks from fastener heads visible on panel surfaces. Silestone specified galvanized fasteners for the SL series and stainless for CT; some installers substituted to save cost. Rust indicates the wrong fastener was used, and it is bleeding through the panel coating.
• Cracked or missing flashing at pipe penetrations or chimney saddles. Silestone’s factory flashing used a EPDM collar bonded to a metal base; the EPDM hardens after 8-12 years in Peninsula sun and cracks at the fold. This is the most common repair we make, and the one most owners miss until water enters.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely check from the ground or a sturdy ladder: granule loss patterns, visible fastener rust, and whether panels are lying flat. Use binoculars; do not walk the roof. Silestone panels are slick when dusty and brittle when cold, and the composite substrate cracks under point loads.

Where DIY goes wrong: lifting panels to inspect membrane requires releasing the fastening system, and SL-series hooks are tension-loaded, they will spring when unseated. Valley and penetration flashing involves cutting and sealing that must integrate with existing membrane; a poor seal traps water rather than shedding it.
